Hyundai A League Teams

The Hyundai A-League is Australia’s only professional soccer league, it came about as a result of the collapse of the NSL and in 2005 – 2006 had its Inaugural Season in Australia, It has quickly grown in popularity with 10 teams now competing in the League with one from New Zealand as well.

Australia is a country full of eager and enthusiastic football fans and as such, many are familiar with the Hyundai A League. The governing Football Federation Australia originally founded it in 2004 after the embarrassing crash of the National Soccer League and began it’s first season in 2005-2006. The A league is currently made up of 10 clubs from both Australia and New Zealand. These clubs were founded anywhere from before the A league was formed (back in 1957 as is the case with the Brisbane Roar) and as recent as 2008 (as can be seen with the North Queensland Fury and Gold Coast United).

The teams are designed to be for the youth of Australia and New Zealand, and are funded quite differently than most high-grade national teams. Each A League team has a salary cap of 2.1 million Australian Dollars for a minimum of 19 players. This reduced salary at first brought fears that the A League teams would be substandard, but this fear was countered with the introduction of a Marquee player, who is paid outside of the salary cap by the Hyundai A League itself, not the heads of the A League teams.

Necessary adaption in the Hyundai A League football:

Since the A League teams were introduced for the youth though, the introduction of Junior Marquees was also a necessary step. These players must be under 23, and have an additional $150,000 which with they can be paid outside of the salary cap.

The Hyundai A League takes place in ten different stadiums- one in each of the ten regions that have a club. The largest of these is the Docklands Stadium, able to seat 56,000+, while the smallest A League stadium is the Hindmarsh Stadium which can seat up to 16,500 individuals.

While not an international league, the Hyundai A League is lucky enough to sport top referee officials, most of which have served in the FIFA games. These referees are known for their fair and unbiased calls, which encourages A League betting and the development of fair-minded players.

Many awards are given after the tournaments are finished, such as the Johnny Warren medal (given to the best player as said by his fellow team-mates), and the Joe Marston medal (given to the best player in the A League Final), and others including the Zurich Referee of the Year, Coach of the Year, Goalkeeper of the Year, and the recently introduced Foreign Player of the Year.

No matter how many awards are given though, the key aspect of the Hyundai A League is to promote fair and competitive play among younger players so that they can grow and mature into national team players. They are paid enough to support the lifestyle, and worked and conditioned hard enough to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle; all of this is made possible by the funding of Hyundai, and support of the Australian populace.
