The Caulfield Cup

A highlight of the Caulfield Spring Carnival series of meetings, the race is held during theweekend immediately after the running of the Caulfield Guineas. It is said to be the richest mile and a half handicap in thoroughbred racing, and is an important qualifier and trial for the Melbourne Cup.

It is run over a distance of 2400 metres, at the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne. Entry is open to 3 year old and above to both colt & filly thoroughbreds.

First run in 1879, the race was regarded as being inseperable from the Melbourne Cup and a win in both races – the “Cup Double” is considered to be one of the finest achievements in Australian thoroughbred racing. So far, during its history, only 11 racehorses have managed to achieve this feat.

With more international thoroughbreds travelling to Australia to complete the season, more UK bookmakers have been giving the coverage to the Caulfield Cup. Whilst odds are not available too far in advance, the coverage of the race in the week before it is run is widespread.

Australia’s Caulfield Cup is one of the bigger races you’ll find on the market today. It is held in October, a fortnight before the more prestigious Melbourne Cup. The race is held at the Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne.

The handicap race is an exciting event that runs to a distance of over 2,400 meters. Most of Australia’s best-trained horses participate in the event, partly because of the hefty purse prize of $2.5 million and the trophies amounting to $44,000. And the horses show up again at the Melbourne Cup in the hopes of bagging the Cups Double prize. Punters love to bet on the Cups Double because of the extremely generous odds that they can take.

Which bookie should I bet with?

Each bookie has a different bag of tricks for punters, so you have to be rather careful about placing your bet. Nearly everyone will offer Caulfield Cup markets well ahead of the actual race, usually in the futures market.

IASbet.com is a good bookmaker to consider, as it is one of the leaders in the industry of thoroughbred wagering in Australia. They offer early-bird markets that open way ahead of all the other bookmakers. Plus, they also offer City SuperPrice that guarantees a payout higher than the 3 Australian TAB’s.

Other bookies you might want to look into are Centrebet.com, which offers fixed odds betting at very decent odds; while Sportingbet.com.au and Sportsbet.com.au offer Quaddies which are extremely popular.

How to pick a sure winner

While you can analyze race form, stats, and track distance to your heart’s content, they can only help you so much. However, I’d like to share my personal system of choosing a winner to help you out. You just have to remember three things:

  • Horses aged between 4yo, 5yo and 6yo have the best record of any horses in the long history of the race.
  • The winner usually falls within the 56.5kg and 59.5kg weight range.
  • Horses paying $20 and under are more likely to prevail as history suggests.

Picking horses within these categories should put the odds in your favor. This system has been tried and tested over the years, so you can be sure that will also work for you.

What are the key lead-up races?

When analyzing the form in Group 1 races like the Caulfield Cup, it’s a good idea to check out the form in lead-up races that have produced plenty of winners in the past.

There are three races that have proven to be a very good guide for the next Caulfield Cup winner: the Toorak Handicap, the Yalumba Stakes, and the Herbert Power Stakes. All are run at Caulfield under similar conditions. The horse that wins at the Caulfield Cup will almost certainly have come from one of these races with a bit of success.
