James Bart’ Bartholomew Cummings was born and raised in Adelaide on 14 November 1927. After his high school completion young Bart’, aptly named The Cup King in later years worked for his father at the Adelaide Horse stables. He loved the racing industry so much that in 1953 he took out his own training licence. His first Derby was won in 1958 with Stormy Passage. In the 51 years since Bart’ has continued to train stakes winners every single year.

Why Bart’ is known as the Cups King:

At the young age of 23 Bart’ first experienced the excitement and thrill of winning a Melbourne Cup. That was back in 1950 with the home-bred Comic Court. To date Bart’ success has seen him take out 12 Cup wins and many wonder if he can do it again in the Melbourne Cup 2009. One thing is clear, Bart Cummings is the Cups King due to his incredible success rate of winning the Melbourne Cup 12 times as well as getting 5 quinellas to boost.

In 1968 Bart’ established his own stables at Flemington. Saintly Place, as they are known are still his Melbourne headquarters today. He manages his spelling and training operations from Leilani Lodge, his Randwick stables set up in 1975.

Bart’s winning Melbourne Cup horses:

Despite his incredible success as horse trainer Bart wouldn’t be the man he is without the true stars of the show – the thoroughbred horses responsible for his Cup wins. He won the Melbourne Cup in the following years with these champion horses:

  • 1965: Light Fingers
  • 1966: Galilee
  • 1967: Red Handed
  • 1974: Think Big
  • 1975: Think Big
  • 1977: Gold and Black
  • 1979: Hyperno
  • 1990: Kingston Rule
  • 1991: Let’s Elope
  • 1996: Saintly
  • 1999: Rogan Josh
  • 2008: Viewed

Bart’ and Blake Shinn:

Blake Shinn the jockey and Bart’ attracted a special kind of attention when Blake rode Viewed over the finish line at the 2008 Melbourne Cup in front of English horse Bauer by a split second. The resulting roar in the crowd spoke volumes about the tension we all felt at the close-call win.

It was one of the highlights of Melbourne Cup history and once again put Bart Cummings’ name into the eyes and mouths of the Australian public. We are certainly waiting in anticipation what the Melbourne Cup 2009 will bring.

Bart’s future in horse racing:

According to news reports in Australian papers Bart’ is confident about his future in Australian horse racing. His confidence reaches to include Roman Emperor as a potential winner of this year’s Melbourne Cup. Only time will tell if Bart’s hunch is going to be proven true or not and all we can do is sit back, watch and bet on the winning horse.
