Cricket Betting In Australia
Cricket in Australia
One of the biggest sports in Australia (even more widely publicised than football according to some), cricket has been around for over two hundred years and is generally considered the nation’s sport because of popularity in local, domestic, and national levels. The sport has four major national competitions that take place, these being the Sheffield Shield, Ford Ranger Cup, KFC Twenty20 Big Bash, and the Women’s National Cricket League. Cricket in Australia is represented by 14 different teams. A men and a women team from each state: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, and Western Australia.
Cricket has been around, and the first recorded match ever to have taken place in Australia was in the country’s capital of Sydney. The game was played in the December of 1803. The fact though that the game had attracted media attention though (featured in a report in the Sydney Gazette) would lead one to believe that the sport was already well-established in the infant colony. Intercolonial cricket in Australia though didn’t begin until later that century, in the year of 1853. At this time, cricket betting was rather sparse. It picked up though once Australia was challenged by its first international team. Hailing from England, the Spiers and Pond private enterprise organised their team to hold a friendly tour to Australia in 1861. This tour would later be returned when some local Australians decided to tour England in 1868.
These continued tours went well on throughout the century on to the year 1882, at which point Australia beat England on their own turf. This sparked massive media uproar, during which one particular reported satirically stated that England’s cricket was going to be cremated and sent to Australia. The next year, England returned and dubbed the tour “The quest to regain the ashes”. Thus, The Ashes was born- a biennial cup that takes place in England and Australia alternately. As the most heated rivalry among the entire sport of cricket, wagers are high and online cricket betting beats almost every other variety of sport combined in the Australian scene.
Indeed, cricket in Australia is of epic proportions, and is the equivalent to America’s Football or Germany’s soccer. It is the nation’s sport- their identity in the global scale of athletics and one of the fields in which they dominate the competition with no remorse. With over a sixty percent victory rating in international cricket championships, the sport is not going to die down any time soon, and Australia is most likely going to remain the cricket powerhouse.
